ABOUT SWEET ONE

Cash is alive.

But who knows how bad he’s hurt.

There was an explosion, and he won’t wake up.

It’s the phone call the any Titan wife dreads, and the one that brings Nicola Garrison to her knees in tears. Crying and praying for Cash to wake up, she has one secret to tell him and now it might be too late.

“I’m pregnant. You’re going to be a daddy.” Practicing the words a million times didn’t matter if he wasn’t coming home from his job.

In her rush to save him, she lets down her guard. One slip. One tiny mistake. That is all it takes to let years of protecting her identity fall apart. Her time in witness protection, then at the CIA is called into question by someone who has the power to end her life—and the baby she’s carrying.

As the game of shadows and spooks, mobsters and goons comes back to hunt Nicola, survival takes on new meaning—protecting her baby, her husband, and her life—forcing her to make a choice that would kill her anyway in the end.

She made another quick scan of the perimeter. She squinted. There’s someone over there. Nic didn’t move or act as though she saw that person, who was probably a tourist out for a long walk along the beach—close to the reeds, standing still.

Nope. Red alarm. Something was wrong. Shit. Okay.

Never one to give up her cover, she stretched, and with faux-carefree laziness, watched another wave, eyeballing the figure in her peripheral vision, before slowly making her way inside.

As soon as the door clicked shut, she moved boots, running from one side of the house to the next. There was nothing like a Jared Westin beach house to keep things armed and dangerous. She hit the master bedroom, slamming to a slowdown, tiptoeing around a sleeping Cash, and grabbed the binoculars.

What else did she need? Hell, right now she was on a fact-finding mission. Back around the bed, and she was—

“Freeze.”

Shit. Nicola turned around to face her very awake husband. “Yeah?”

“What are you up to?”

“Had to get something.” And in a freakin’ hurry. “Go back to sleep.”

“What?”

“Binoculars.”

“Why?” He hadn’t bothered to open his eyes or move.

“Jeez. Bird watching. Can I go now?”

Cash turned his head and opened his eyes. “Lie to me again, and see what happens.”

Oh boy. “Go back to sleep.”

“You ran through the house like you were up to something.”

“I’ll explain later.” Telling him now would make his head explode, and that’d be bad for recovery and all. “My bird watching is time sensitive. Grill me later. Please?”

His eyes narrowed. “You have the Spidey senses too.” He pushed out of bed, feeling along the side of the nightstand until he retrieved a Glock 9.

“Cash Garrison!”

He stood up, pausing for what had to be a second longer than his old norm. “Let’s go.”

“The doctor said no loud noise, no percussive forces. He stipulated no gunfire.”

Caleb Hall has always been the golden boy of the gridiron. Because of his talent at football, coupled with his father’s wealth, he’s always gotten his way. But when a night of drunken debauchery lands him in hot water with the college athletic board, neither his influential father nor his charming grin can save him. He finds it a total buzz kill when he is sentenced to community service with troubled youth at an inner-city shelter. But his nightmare is only beginning when his greatest high school regret is the very one in charge of the program, and she has him by the balls in more ways than one.

For Avery Prescott, senior year was a nightmare of epic proportions, and Caleb Hall played the lead villain. After she fled her small town for college in the bright lights of Atlanta, she thought she had escaped the painful memories of her past. She never could have imagined Caleb would waltz through the door of the outreach program she presided over. But Avery has news for Caleb—she isn’t the same shy, doormat of a girl she was in high school. Since she holds Caleb’s football future in her hands, she’s more than ready to make payback a real bitch.

Will they stay in the defensive zone or discover that sometimes life's greatest lessons are learned the hard way?

EXCERPT
Six lemon drop shots line the center of our table, and we’ve all refreshed our drinks and have fresh glasses of ice water.

“Ready?” Emery asks, and looks around at everyone, a hint of a challenge in her eyes.

“Let’s do it,” Zay says and rubs his hands together, ready to begin.

Emery beams with delight. “Okay, so we’re going counterclockwise. Rowan goes first, then Saige, then Zay, then Kinsley, and I’m last. We’ll ask you Truth or Dare. If you pick truth, we’ll use the questions from the app. If it’s a dare, we’ll come up with one as a group. Rules though, friends.” She looks pointedly at each of us. “It has to be safe, but it has to push boundaries.”

The guys grumble.

“I refuse to kiss Rowan,” Zay teases.

“You’re not my type,” Rowan jokes back.

“So, Ro.” Emery grins at him. “Truth or Dare?”

Rowan rubs his chin and ponders his two options for a minute. “Truth.”

“I knew he’d go easy on us,” Kinsley says.

“Hey hey,” he chides. “Let’s start off nice and slow. Build our way up.”

Emery taps the app on her phone, and the questions scramble. “Okay,” she says and chuckles to herself as she reads the question before reading it back to us. “Have you ever cheated on a boyfriend or girlfriend?”

“Really?” Rowan raises an unenthused eyebrow. “That’s the question?”

“Yep.” She turns the phone to face him, and he turns up his nose.

“Yes,” he answers, sounding bored. “I’ve cheated on both.”

“What!” Kinsley screams across the table. “You’ve had a boyfriend and a girlfriend?”

“Yes,” he mumbles and takes a sip of wine. “It was a long time ago.”

She drops her head back in laughter. “I need to hear more about this.”

I glance over to where Holt stands with his guest, and we make eye contact again, sharing a brief but friendly smile before I quickly turn my attention back to my friends. Emery is smirking at me, which means she caught me looking.

“No, you will not hear more about this.” Rowan raises his chin in defiance, then snatches Emery’s phone. “Moving on. Saige, truth or dare?”

I glance around the table at my friends and, without much thinking, blurt out, “Dare.”

Oh, shit. My stomach twists into a giant knot as those words fall from my tongue.

Everyone begins hooting and hollering, and I can’t help but laugh along with them. “Remember, safe,” Emery reminds us. “And, friends, let’s be reasonable.”

“Reasonable,” Kinsley snorts. “Okay, let’s put our heads together, guys.” They lean in to the center of the small round pub table, and whisper-yell over the tops of empty drink glasses and finally all sit back in their chairs.

“Bad idea.” Zay shakes his head and purses his lips. “I don’t like it.”

“Well, if one of you disagrees, then maybe you should come up with something new,” I chime in and look at Zay, who looks irritated.

“Not in this lifetime.” Kinsley giggles. “You ready, Saige?”

I swallow hard against my dry throat. “No.”

Truth. Always choose truth. What was I thinking?

“Too bad.” She grabs a shot off the table. “You are going to go ask Holt Hamilton out for a drink.”

“What?” I snap at her. I look around the table like my friends have lost their damn minds. “I can’t ask him out for drinks. He’ll think it’s a date, and dating a superior is strictly prohibited per the company handbook. There’s this thing called ethics in the workplace, people. Have you all lost your minds? Are you all crazy? Are you trying to get me fired?” They all roar with laughter and my heart races.

“First of all,” Kinsley tips her head back and swallows the lemon drop shot, “it’s not against company policy to date a coworker. You cannot date your direct manager. Holt is not your direct manager.” She looks pleased, like she just solved a murder case.

“He owns the fucking company,” I bark at her. “That pretty much qualifies as my manager.”

“Pipe down, little one.” Rowan pats my hand. “It’s just a drink, and purely innocent.”

I glower at him. “You said you’d have my back. This is not having my back, Ro.” I wipe my sweaty hands on my skirt.

“It’s all in pure fun.” His eyebrows dance at me. “Tell him we dared you if you have to.”

My frown deepens. “So I look like a thirteen-year-old? Hi, Mr. Hamilton. My friends over there dared me to ask you out. Will you have drinks with me? No thanks.” I cross my arms over my chest in defiance. Then, realizing that I probably look like I’m actually thirteen, I uncross them.

Zay chimes in, “I’ll bet one hundred dollars she won’t do it.”

“Chicken, Saige?” Kinsley kicks me under the table.

“I’m not a chicken, you assholes,” I grumble. “I’m reasonable. This is not reasonable. I’d like to keep my job.”

Emery nudges me. “It’s all in fun, and I am dying to see the look on his face when you ask him.”

I glance at Holt, feeling anxiety building in my stomach. Suddenly, he turns in our general direction to find all of us watching him. His brows pinch together in a confused look, but he offers us all a polite smile and a little nod of his head.

Ugh… “Fine. I’ll do it.” I add my two whiny cents, “This is really stupid, though, and if I wasn’t already close to being three sheets to the wind, I’d just take the damn shot.” I fan my face. The heat from the alcohol or the stuffy bar is getting to me.

“Atta girl!” Rowan grabs my hand and helps me down from the tall barstool. My knees wobble, and I press a hand my cheek to cool the flush crawling across my face. Between my nerves and the alcohol, my stomach is twisting and turning.

“Just breathe,” Rowan whispers in my ear as he grips my hand tightly. “Just ask him if he’d be interested in grabbing a drink sometime.”

“And when he says no?”

“You just smile and come back to us.”

Zay clears his throat. “What if he says yes?”

I turn around to shoot him a death glare.

Emery answers, “Then just know that she asked out the hottest man alive, and he accepted. Win-win.” She offers me a reassuring smile.

“Hottest man alive?” Zay mumbles under his breath and pffts into his glass of beer.

“Yes!” Emery and Kinsley say simultaneously.

“I can’t do this,” I say, reaching for my chair. Nerves are getting the better of me, and my knees are literally knocking together.

“You can,” Rowan assures me. “Go.”

Blurb

There once was a boy, and I loved him.

Logan Francis Silverstone and I were complete opposites. I danced, and he stood still. He was quiet, while I ran my mouth. He struggled to find a smile, and I refused to frown.

The night I saw the darkness that truly lived inside of him, I couldn't look away.

We were broken together, yet somehow whole. We were wrong together, but always right. We were the stars that burned across the night sky, searching for a wish, praying for better tomorrows.

Until the day I lost him. He threw us away with one hasty decision--a decision that changed us forever.

There once was a boy, and I loved him.

And for a few breaths, a few whispers, a few moments, I think he loved me, too.

My Review

I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is another emotional one. I basically cried my way through this book. Talk about an emotional roller coaster. Yeesh. As it says in the book multiple times "But after the highs, always came the lows." So many highs and so many lows. Just when you think things were good...BAM...something happened to bring it back to the bad.

This book is told in two parts. The first part takes place while Logan and Alyssa are in high school. They meet when Logan comes into the supermarket where Alyssa is working. Alyssa notices him and helps him out when he doesn't have enough money to make his purchases. The two strike up a conversation and before they know it, they are the best of friends. Eventually their friendship turns romantic and it's the summer before Alyssa is leaving for college. Unfortunately for them, tragedy strikes and they are separated. The second part of the book takes place 5 years later. Alyssa and Logan are back in the same town and they need to confront not only their past, but also what is happening in the present.

On paper Alyssa and Logan should have never worked as a couple. They came from two very backgrounds. Logan had a junkie mom who was given drugs by his absent father and he often took drugs. Alyssa was from an upper middle class, single parent family. She played piano and planned on majoring in music therapy in college. Their lives couldn't be more different, but a couple they are perfect for each other. They know exactly what the other needs and when they need it. At times all they had to do was say the following two sentences. It was kind of the thing that grounded them and made everything okay:
“You’re okay, Logan Francis Silverstone,” she said.
“I’m okay, Alyssa Marie Walters,” I replied.
They just have an unbreakable bond that allowed their love to survive the toughest of situations. Trust me...they go through a lot and when Logan professes his love (again) to Alyssa I cried like a freaking baby.

“I’m still in love with you,” he repeated walking closer to me. “I’ve tried to stop it. I tried to ignore it. I tried to wish it away, but it won’t leave. Whenever you’re near me, I want you closer. Whenever you laugh, I want the sound to never fade. Whenever you’re sad, I want to kiss your tears away . I know all of the reasons that I shouldn’t want to be with you . I know that I can never be forgiven for what happened all those years ago, but I also know that I still love you. You’re still the fire that keeps me warm when life becomes cold. You’re still the voice that keeps the darkness at bay. You’re still the reason my heart beats. You’re still the air in my lungs. You’re still my greatest high. And I am still truly, madly, painfully in love with you. And I don’t think I’ll ever know how to stop.”

So. Many. Tears. It was clear from very early on in the book that Alyssa and Logan were meant to be together. And while I knew that they would eventually get their happily ever after, so much happens and it's so well written that there was a few times where I thought they may not.

The first book in this series made me cry. This one did too. I don't know if there will be a third book in this series, but if there is I will definitely be reading it. And making sure I am stocked up on kleenex.

“If you don’t stop, I’m going to take you back to the room and give you what you’ve been begging for. Or is that what you’re after?”

Mandy giggles and leans into Charles, and I watch from behind them, trying my best not to eavesdrop. It’s not hard to overhear from just a few paces away, and I’m also trying my best not to look envious of the couple, but I can’t help that either.

I clear my throat to remind the casino owner that I’m still here, and they turn to look as if surprised to see me. Mandy blushes and looks away while Charles just smiles his devilish grin. Mr. and Mrs. Townsend have built the Snake Eyes casino into something wonderful, and I’m here today to talk about some opportunities for our casinos to work together.

I’ve owned the Blue Diamond casino for a few years now, taking it from a downtrodden, shabby dive to a shining jewel. I’ve been looking to expand some of our entertainment venues, and Charles is looking for the same. If we are able to work together, we both look to double our revenue, and it’s hard to turn down something like that. It’s unusual for casinos to promote one another, but Charles and I are birds of a feather. We both have a head for business and a strong work ethic. Although since Charles has gotten married, I can see he’s slowed down just a bit.

I would have slowed down with Tiffany. The thought enters my mind before I can stop it, and it hits me in the gut. I’m usually in better control of myself than that, but being close to a couple who are obviously so in love is eating away at me. My jealousy is palpable, and I have the urge to go throw up.

For years I searched for her. Do you know how many Tiffany Smiths are in the world? Fifty-two thousand, seven hundred and fifty-nine. And that’s assuming she didn’t change her name. I’ve gone through countless private detectives and more money than a normal man could make in a lifetime trying to find her. False hope and women pretending to be her have broken me over the years. I’ve built my empire in the hopes that one day she might find me. Hell, I even named my casino after her. I’ll never forget her bright blue eyes. I see them every time I close my own. Somewhere in my heart, I always thought we would find one another, but maybe she’s with someone else, moved on. The thought makes me clench my fists and grit my teeth. I only have myself to blame. I should have found her by now.

“You doing okay, Ethan?” Charles’s words snap me out of my angry guessing game, and I just nod, following him through the casino lobby.

“Have you seen Foxy’s new show?” Mandy asks, obviously trying to bring us back to business.

“No, I’m afraid I haven’t had the time. But I’ve heard great things.” We pass one of her posters for the old show, and I get a funny feeling in my stomach. It happens every time I see something that reminds me of my Tiffany. The poster is of a woman, turned away from the camera with only her head and shoulders visible. Her hair is white blonde with a pink bow pinned in it. The words Foxy Bow are emblazoned across the bottom in glitter. The picture doesn’t show her face, but the blonde hair makes me think of my girl. This is Vegas, though, and a bottle of bleach is on every street corner.

“Oh, we need to have these changed out. They are the old promotional banners. Come around the front and see the new one. I think they installed it just this morning.”

“Sure, sounds great.” I don’t know why I’m melancholy all of a sudden, but I think it’s because Tiffany is on my mind so much lately.

As we walk through the casino, I try to pay attention to the conversation. Charles and Mandy are discussing plans for the casinos and what they want as far as the future of our partnership is concerned. I spend most of my life working to get noticed by someone I haven’t seen in ten years. Someone who may or may not want to see me. Someone who may or may not even be alive.

I stop that train of thought as soon as it enters my mind. I would know if my soul was gone. I would feel it in my bones if she wasn’t still breathing. I’d know it.

The day I was pulled apart from her was the worst day of my life. When I was put in the back of that cop car by DCP, I begged them to take me back. I knew that if I was separated from her, something bad would happen. If I didn’t have my eyes on her at all times, he would get to her. I just knew her father was waiting for his chance.

When we got down to the police station, it turned out that they had found a relative of mine. I’d gone into foster care after my mother died. I was placed with the Mark family, who just happened to live next to my Tiffany. When I was at the darkest point in my life, it was like God sent her to me. To shine light on my dark world.

They found my grandfather, but he had recently passed, leaving everything he had to me. A pile of money and a casino that wasn’t turning a profit. As soon as the cops let me go, I raced back to Tiffany, only to find her gone. I beat the shit out of her father but later realized he didn't know where she went either. So I started looking for her and building a life for us. Taking what my grandfather left me and increasing it tenfold. For her. For us.

“There she is. Our star.” Mandy waves her hand up, and I follow her line of sight.

I look up, seeing a huge banner stretched across the front entrance of the hotel, and as her ice blue eyes stare back at me, my knees go weak. It’s her. It’s my Tiffany. Clutching my chest, I nearly collapse to the floor, and Charles and Mandy rush to help me.

“Where?” I manage to choke out, but they don’t respond. They look at one another as if they’re confused. Like my whole world isn’t about to explode.

“Where is Tiffany?!” I bellow, and it echoes off the black marble walls.

“She’s about to go on stage. What the fuck is wrong, Ethan?” Charles is still holding my arm to steady me, but I break free and run as fast as I can to the other side of the casino. My legs burn and my chest aches. It can’t be possible. It can’t be true. Please God, let it be true.

I don’t know what happens, or who I knock over to get there, but when I get to the entrance, security is there to try to stop me. I feel a sudden rage come over me and I turn, punching someone who puts a hand on me.

I see Charles out of the corner of my eye. He’s holding up his hands and telling people to let me pass. He must see that I’m in a fury that won’t be stopped.

When I get past the entrance, I walk into a dark room, seeing the stage at the end, and I watch the curtains part. A bright light centers on the woman, and all the air leaves my lungs.

Standing there, glowing with perfection, is my girl.

Music of the Heart

Synopsis:
For Abby Renard, the plan was supposed to be simple—join her brothers’ band on the last leg of their summer tour and decide if she’s finally ready for the limelight by becoming its fourth member. Of course, she never imagined stumbling onto the wrong tour bus at Rock Nation would accidentally land her in the bed of Jake Slater, the notorious womanizing lead singer of Runaway Train. When he mistakes her for one of his groupie’s, Abby quickly lets him know she sure as hell isn't in his bed on purpose.

Jake Slater never imagined the angel who fell into his bed would resist his charms by promptly kneeing him in the balls. Of course, the fact she seems like a prissy choir girl makes her anything but his type. So he is more than surprised when after betting Abby she wouldn’t last a week on their tour bus, she is more than willing to prove him wrong. But as Jake’s personal life begins to implode around him, he finds an unlikely ally in Abby. He’s never met a woman he can talk to, joke with, or most importantly make music with.

As the week starts comes to a close, neither Abby nor Jake is ready to let go. Can a sweetheart Country songstress and a bad boy of Rock N Roll actually have a future together?
